FAQ

  • What must I expect during the hospitalisation?

Hospital time involves treatment, rest, and recovery. Often, focus on treatment; rest and recovery are vital too. While treatment is significant, rest aids the best results.

  • What must I bring along for hospitalisation?
    • Referral letter from your physician.

    • ID: Passport, ID card, Birth certificate (below 15 years), Driver's license.

    • Guarantee letter from insurance or employer (if applicable).

    • Previous medical reports (X-Rays, blood tests, etc.).

    • List of current medications.

    • Comfortable nightwear and clothing.

    • Mobile phone with charger.

    • Toiletries (toothbrush, soap, etc.).

    • Contact our International Relationship Manager for special needs.

    • Essential personal items like glasses, hearing aids.

    • Avoid valuables, outside food, large cash sums.

    • Keep passports, visas secure.

    • Travel light for a hassle-free stay.

  • Can the patients have a care-giver and receive visitors?

We at Gleneagles Hospitals, believe that emotional support and well-being are equally important to a person’s recovery. And therefore, encourage you to bring along one caregiver who is available with you at all times. This caregiver should be a close relative or family member or personal friend. We allow visitors at designated hours. The visitors are, however, discouraged to visit patients in intensive care or undergoing critical procedures for the benefit of the patient. Also, visitors must keep in mind other patient rights and their responsibilities while visiting.

  • What is the expected outcome of hospitalisation?

Leaving the hospital ideally means complete recovery. But for major cases, it's about achieving specific goals. Understand expected outcomes. End of hospitalisation isn't always end of treatment. More visits or medication might follow.

  • Why is a surgery necessitated?

The need for surgical intervention differs from case to case. However, in most cases, the fundamental principle is that the condition requires excision, suturing, grafting, bypassing and other such procedures – which constitute surgery. Doctors will opt for surgical intervention if it is likely to quicken recovery, improve chances of recovery and help the patient have a better chance of overcoming the disease.

  • Who will perform the surgery?

Your Surgeon will discuss surgery details. They lead a specialised team including nurses, paramedics, and other specialists. Anaesthesia will be monitored by an Anaesthetist.

  • What will happen on the day of surgery?

On the day of Surgery, you will be prepped in sterile robes, intubated if needed, and undergo final tests. No food from midnight. The family waits in the surgical area. Monitors are applied for Heart Rate and Blood Pressure.

      Before Surgery:

    • No food or drink after midnight.

    • If medication is needed, take minimal water.

    • Remove items like hairpins, contacts, dentures.

    • Bring essentials if admitted later.

  • What kind of anesthetic will I be given?

The choice of pain relievers and anaesthesia is decided based on the nature of the surgery, the patient’s condition and the recovery options post-surgery.

  • How long does it take to recover from surgery?

Typically, an overnight stay in post-surgical intensive care allows a patient to recover sufficiently from the surgery. With anesthesia waning the patient may experience mild grogginess, pain etc.

Your surgeon will let your family/friend know how you are doing and answer questions, letting them know whether you require hospitalization or whether you will be discharged home.
