First Bowel Transplant In Mumbai

Dr. Gaurav Chaubal and his team successfully completed Mumbai’s first Small Bowel Transplant at Gleneagles Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, recently. The procedure was performed on 18th May and marks a major milestone for the hospital and its team of specialists.

The small bowel is a vital part of the digestive system, and patients who suffer from short bowel syndrome or arterial thrombosis leading to bowel gangrene can benefit from a transplant. The surgery is technically challenging as the small bowel is prone to lymphocyte mediated immune injury more than any other solid organ and hence timing of immunosuppressant, cross match of both the donor and recipient and the anastomosis of the small bowel is of utmost importance.

Dr Gaurav Chaubal led his team along with other experts to complete the surgery in about 9 hours with the recipient being stable through out the surgery and extubated on the table post the surgery. Post operatively, the patient is recovering well and is expected to be discharge in a couple of weeks.

We are proud to have been able to offer this life-changing procedure to our patients, and we will continue to strive to be at the forefront of medical innovation in Mumbai.
