PROCEDURES

PAP SMEAR TEST

A Pap Smear Test is a screening procedure for Cervical Cancer. It tests for the presence of any Cancerous cells in the Cervix which is the opening of the Uterus. During the procedure, the cells from the Cervix are gently scraped off and observed under the microscope to check for the presence of any abnormal growth. Early detection of Cervical Cancer cells with the help of the Pap Smear Test is useful as the treatment for the disease can be started early before it spreads to other parts of the body.

The patient will be asked to lie down on the examination table with the legs spread wide and feet resting in supports called stirrups. The doctor will then slowly insert a device called a speculum into the Vagina to keep the walls of the Vagina open and this provides access to the Cervix. Then the doctor scrapes a small sample of cells from your cervix using a tool called a spatula. Most women feel a slight push and irritation during the scraping.

SONOGRAPHY

Sonography is a painless test in which high-frequency sound waves are used to take live images from inside the body without the introduction of instruments. Sonography test is usually performed during pregnancy to monitor the development of the fetus in the womb. It is also done to get a clear picture of the reproductive Organs of the body. If any abnormalities are detected, the person will be immediately treated. Sonography can provide a clear image of the Bladder, Uterus, Ovaries, etc. Thus, the test helps in the easy diagnosis of the disease.

Before the examination, the patient will be asked to change into a hospital gown. The Sonographer applies a special lubricating jelly on the skin. This prevents friction while he rubs the Ultrasound Transducer on the skin. The Transducer helps in creating a picture on the monitor. With the help of the picture, the doctor interprets the results.

HYSTERECTOMY

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the Uterus of a woman. A Hysterectomy is performed for several reasons. This surgery can be done to treat various chronic pain conditions, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, uncontrollable Vaginal bleeding and also certain types of Cancer and infections. The need for the surgery depends upon the severity of the problem in the patient. The doctor may also remove the Ovaries and the Fallopian Tubes during the procedure.

To perform a Hysterectomy procedure, the patient is first given local or general anaesthesia to reduce the pain. The Uterus is removed through the Vagina without any abdominal incision.

COLPOSCOPY

Colposcopy is a procedure to examine the Cervix, Vagina, and Vulva closely with the help of a surgical instrument called a Colposcope. A Colposcope is a large, electric microscope with a bright light that enables the doctor to examine the Cervix. A Colposcopy procedure is usually performed when the Pap Smear Test has shown abnormal results. If the doctor finds an unusual area of cells during the colonoscopy procedure, a sample of tissue is collected for laboratory testing.

The patient will be asked to lie down on the examination table with the legs spread wide and feet resting in supports called stirrups. The doctor will then slowly insert a device called a speculum into the Vagina to keep the walls of the Vagina open and this provides access to the Cervix. The doctor uses a cotton swab or a solution of vinegar to clean the area to clear the mucus for a better view of the abnormal cells. The doctor may take photographs and biopsy in the areas that appear suspicious.

CESAREAN DELIVERY

Cesarean section or a c-section is the delivery of a baby through a surgical incision in the abdomen and uterus. It can be elective and sometimes it can be an emergency procedure. The surgery is performed under regional anaesthesia (either spinal or epidural block).

During the surgery, an incision is made in the lower abdomen (vertically or horizontally). After that, an incision is made in the uterus, which ruptures the amniotic sac. Once the amniotic sac is ruptured, the baby is removed from the uterus and the umbilical cord is cut. Then, the placenta is removed. Finally, the incisions are closed with the sutures or with staples and covered with sterile dressing.

VENTOUSE DELIVERY

Ventouse delivery or vacuum-assisted operative vaginal delivery is a procedure where the vacuum extractor is used to assist the delivery. In most cases, regional anaesthesia is given, however, it can be carried out without anaesthesia. During the procedure, the vacuum cup is positioned to cover the head of the baby by inserting the soft cup into the vagina. Then, the negative pressure is induced and the baby moves down with each pull.
