The Department of Infectious Diseases at Gleneagles HealthCity, Perumbakkam – Sholinganallur provides advanced diagnosis, treatment, care and management of serious, life threatening infectious diseases and disorders. Undertaking both in-patient and outpatient consultations, the Department offers treatment and consultation for long duration fever and other hidden infections. The Department of Infectious Diseases also offers advisory on travel, safety, vaccination and other precautions for patients currently suffering from infections.
We also undertake pre-transplant evaluation and checks for patients expected to undergo an organ transplant. This is to minimize the risk of post-transplant infections as the patients will be placed on immunosuppressants leading to a higher risk of infections. The Department also provides specialist consultation and management services for patients with transplant related infections both for hospitalized patients and for those referred from other centers.
The Department has trained specialists to handle children with infections, including situations too complex to be handled in routine care, including infections in children with immune defects, those on cancer treatment and those undergoing transplant.
The Department if also the nodal agency for implementing infection control measures across the hospital and monitors the antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) efforts of the hospital. This includes the monitoring of the use of high end antibiotics, assistance in dosing of antibiotics in patients, prevention of drug interactions and monitoring of side effects.
The department also coordinates with Microbiology in handling the Infection Prevention and Control services across the hospital, in liaison with all clinical, nursing and support departments. The department assists in development of protocols, training of personnel, doing audits and threat assessment with advice on mitigation.
The department works with Microbiology and Clinical Pharmacy towards novel treatment options like Fecal Microbiota Transplant. The Department’s vaccine clinic is aimed at protection of vulnerable people like the elderly against common preventable medical challenges like influenza, pneumonia and shingles. The department has been involved in research activities both internal and external, which has led to numerous publications. Members of the Department are also been involved in an advisory capacity to the Governmental agencies for key issues (like COVID) and been involved in the conduct of several educational programs in the field of infectious diseases.
