Liver Transplant

A 42-year-old woman from Delhi with a rare genetic disorder called polycystic liver and kidney disease has undergone a combined liver-kidney transplant at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals. Her liver and kidneys were both affected by the genetic disorder, requiring the transplant as a lifesaving procedure.

After thorough assessment, the liver and kidney transplant teams at BGS Gleneagles decided to offer her a simultaneous transplant of both organs, which is technically challenging and has high postoperative risks. The procedure was successful with a suitable deceased donor found in Mysore, and the 15 kg liver removed from the patient was one of the heaviest ever recorded.

The patient remained stable throughout the nine-hour operation, which was completed by an expert team of doctors including Dr Mahesh Gopashetty, Dr Pradeep Krishna, Dr Ravindra Nidoni, Dr Pramod Kumar D A, Dr Anil Kumar B T, and Dr Narendra S Successful postoperative recovery allowed the patient to take care of her daily needs starting on the fourth day post-surgery, and she was discharged from the hospital after 16 days. She is now living a regular life in Delhi with full energy. Her brother had also undergone a similar procedure for the same genetic disorder a few years ago.
