Dr M. C. Uthappa, FRCS (Glasgow, UK), FRCR (London, UK), Fellowship in Interventional Radiology (Oxford, UK), CCST (UK).
Dr. Uthappa is currently the Director of Interventional Radiology and Interventional Oncology at the Gleneagles Interventional Radiology Institute (GIRI) at Gleneagles Hospitals Richmond Road. Prior to this position, he was the Head of Interventional Radiology for the Bangalore Cluster, a major healthcare player in India. Earlier, he was also associated with Gleneagles Hospitals as the Director of Interventional Radiology and Interventional Oncology at Gleneagles Hospitals in Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai from May 2011 to April 2021. He completed his undergraduate medical training at Government Medical College, Mysore. He then obtained Basic Surgical training followed by Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology training in the UK.
In 2002, he joined the Interventional Radiology team in John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals, Oxford, UK, where he spent one year training in all aspects of Interventional Radiology. In 2003 he was appointed as Consultant at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, UK where he set up a dedicated department of Interventional Radiology. He now has an experience of over 21,500 interventional radiology cases. He was an advisor for interventional Radiology for NICE, UK from 2007 to 2010.
Dr Uthappa has an extensive research background with more than 45 publications and scientific articles, numerous abstracts and presentations at various national and international meetings to his credit. He is an expert in all types of interventional radiology procedures for liver cancer and these include Percutaneous Ethanol Injection (PEI), Radiofrequency Ablation (RF), Conventional Transarterial Chemoembolisation (cTACE), DC bead Embolisation, Portal vein Embolisation and Radioembolisation (SIRT).
His other areas of interest include hepatic vein and IVC intervention for budd chiari syndrome, TIPSS and BRTO. He also has extensive experience in Uterine fibroid Embolisation, Embolisation in emergency cases like liver trauma, pelvic trauma, GI bleeding and bronchial artery Embolisation. He is one of the few Interventional Radiologist who has significant experience in management of post liver transplant complications. Dr Uthappa has also started the department of interventional oncology as the emerging field in cancer care.
He set up one stop vein clinic for varicose veins and was one of the first to start Prostate artery embolisation (PAE) for BPH patients in India and also published their intital experience in peer reviewed journal. In the last two years he has set up a dedicated thyroid ablation program at manipal hospitals and successfully completed the first 100 cases of RFA for thyroid nodules in India.
